Police used excessive force when they fired Tasers at a pregnant woman in Seattle and a victim of domestic abuse in Maui, a federal appeals court ruled Monday in a case that could influence how police handle those resisting arrest across the West.

The ruling by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, sitting in a full 11-judge forum used to decide important questions of law, could prompt police forces to reexamine their rules and practices for the temporarily debilitating stun guns.

Dr Know

Sad that it took an appeal to a high court for something so obvious.

Alternative solution:

Blow guns with curare-tipped darts!

When they first started the use of tasers, it was supposed to be only for situations that previously had warranted the police to use their guns. This was supposed to be an alternative to deadly force but has now become so commonly used and abused, that maybe there would be fewer deaths if the tasers were outlawed and the cops were forced to use their brains instead of force.

Something needs to done to curtail the shoot happy attitude of a lot of "thug" officers before the situation escalates to an even worse situation than already exists for both the public and the police. Violence in the name of expediency should never go unquestioned and the taser makes it too easy for an officer to go overboard when the situation could be better handled by talking instead of shooting.
